"CityKids Speak on Liberty"
Banner
The "CityKids Speak on Liberty" Masterpiece is a unique, brightly-colored, eight story artpiece created by the late artist Keith Haring commemorating the Statue of Liberty on her 100th Birthday.
Created by CityKids in collaboration with iconic pop-artist Keith Haring in 1986, this monumental work of art is the largest freestanding piece Haring ever worked on. It is a unique, brightly-colored, 30 ft x 90 ft eight-story banner painted by 1,000 diverse young people alongside Keith Haring.
The banner features their interpretations of what liberty means to them. It has traveled all over the world: Battery Park, NY; Milan, Italy; and Paris, France. Philip Glass, Peter Yarrow and Herbie Hancock played music while the banner was being painted. Yoko Ono, Matilda Cuomo and New Kids on the Block, were among the numerous celebrities who attended her debut at Liberty Tower in Battery Park City, for Lady Liberty's 100th birthday.
Paul McCartney featured the banner on his ‘Driving USA’ Tour, during the song ‘Freedom’ and on stage at his performance at the NFL’s 2002 Super Bowl Pre-show in New Orleans.
