CityKids Alumni nominated for Oscar
February 14, 2008
Charles Mack, a CityKids’ alumnus and former Musical Director, and Jamal Joseph, CityKids’ former Artistic Director, were recently nominated for an Oscar for “Best Song in a Movie.” Charles and Jamal, in collaboration with Tevin Thomas, wrote the original music and lyrics of “Raise It Up” featured in the film August Rush.
Charles and Jamal were both involved in The CityKids’ Repertory Company (Rep) for a number of years. Charles participated in Rep for three years, served as a youth leader, and wrote the lyrics to CityKids’ acclaimed educational video, “Unstoppable.” Jamal was one of CityKids’ first Artistic Directors and motivated young people throughout his time as CityKids. Charles and Jamal remain committed to CityKids and have returned through community service projects, Rep guest artist opportunities and alumni group gatherings.
Charles and Jamal use music as a vehicle to bring a message of hope to young people around the world, as demonstrated through the following lyrics:
“Life falls down on me, cuts into my soul but I know I got the strength to make it through it all cause I’m still standin’ tall breaking through this wall I’m gonna give my all…”
“Raise It Up” will be performed at the Academy Awards show by the IMPACT Repertory Theatre, a youth development organization founded by Jamal. Charles’ sister, Lana Mack, who is also a CityKids’ alumna and former staff member, will be performing with the group. We are proud of Charles, Jamal and Lana, who have drawn on their experiences at CityKids to make a positive impact on the world.
We look forward to watching the Academy Awards show on February 24th and hope you will join us in rooting for these men who so strongly embody CityKids’ vision of providing a creative outlet for young people and supporting them as they address complex social issues through artistic expression. |
